Des Moines – Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen announced today that Iowa Insurance Division has welcomed Kay Fairchild Godfredsen as the new First Deputy Commissioner of Insurance.
“Kay has been a very important member of Iowa’s insurance industry community and we are incredibly thankful for her willingness to serve Iowans in this capacity,” Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said. “Her leadership, strong legal background, and experience dealing with the many regulatory areas of insurance, will be a huge asset for the Iowa Insurance Division on issues both here at the state level and nationally at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.”
Godfredsen has spent most of her career in the insurance industry. Most recently, she held the role of Assistant General Counsel at Nationwide where she offered specialized counsel for all matters in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Prior to her work in insurance, Godfredsen was a mortgage banker in Spencer.
In 2016, Godfredsen became a Co-Chair of the Global Insurance Symposium, a conference that helps the insurance industry meet the ever-changing needs of consumers through innovative solutions. Her guidance helps lead the 2017 Global Insurance Symposium to be a resounding success both in terms of attendance and in the quality of content.
Godfredsen has been Chair of the Iowa Insurance and Financial Services Education Foundation, whose sole mission is to provide scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a career in insurance or financial services. Godfredsen has also served on the board of the Iowa Insurance Institute and several Iowa State Bar Association Committees.
Godfredsen earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and her Juris Doctorate from Drake University. She and her husband, Tom, live in Urbandale and have two children.
