Senate File 619 was signed into law on April 22, 2025, creating new requirements for adjusters.  See Bulletin 25-04 for more information about the Modified Licensing Process or Waiver Request of Required Experience for existing adjusters doing work as an adjuster in Iowa or any other state prior to July 1, 2025.  If you have not been a licensed adjuster or otherwise doing work as an adjuster in Iowa or any other state prior to July 1, 2025 see the information below.

Adjuster Examination

A person that is not subject to the Modified Licensing Process in Bulletin 25-04 wishing to become a resident adjuster licensed in the State of Iowa must successfully pass the appropriate licensing exam. To register for the examination, please contact Pearson Vue at www.pearsonvue.com or 877-540-5825.  If you successfully pass the licensing exam, your test results will be electronically submitted to the NIPR online system.  Please allow up to three business days for the exam results to transfer to the NIPR online system.  Exam results are valid for 90 days.  

A person that is not subject to Bulletin 25-04 wishing to become non-resident adjuster licensed in the State of Iowa must successfully pass the appropriate licensing exam in their resident state and complete the Iowa Examination Exemption

A person with a designated home state license and that wishes to obtain an Iowa nonresident adjuster license you will need to apply with the Iowa Insurance Division.

Public Adjusters

During the application process through the NIPR online system, a person requesting a public adjuster license or a public adjuster business entity license will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility, your customer contract, and the public adjuster checklist and attestation.

Iowa Insurance Division administrative rules regarding the licensure of public adjusters can be found in Iowa Administrative Code chapter 55 (These rules will be updated due to Senate File 619). 

Independent Adjusters 

  • If you have been doing work as an independent adjuster in Iowa or any other state prior to Jan. 1, 2025, see Bulletin 25-04 for more information about the Modified Licensing Process for existing adjusters.
  • If you have been doing work as an independent adjuster in Iowa or any other state and do not meet the requirements to utilize the Modified Licensing Process in Bulletin 25-04, you may request the Iowa Insurance Division waive the required experience requirements to be considered for licensure.
  • Beginning July 1, 2025, if you are a resident of Iowa that does not hold an independent adjuster license in Iowa or any other state you will complete the application process through the NIPR online system, you will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility.
  • If you are a resident of Iowa that does hold a designated home state independent adjuster license in another state, you will complete the application process through the Iowa Insurance Division.
  • Beginning July 1, 2025, if you are a non-resident that does hold an independent adjuster license in another state, you will complete the application process through the NIPR online system, you will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility.  
  • If you are a business entity wanting an independent adjuster business entity license and you do meet the requirements to utilize the Modified Licensing Process in Bulletin 25-04, you will complete the application process through the Independent Adjuster Business Entity Application (must be emailed to producer.licensing@iid.iowa.gov).
  • If you are a business entity wanting an independent adjuster business entity license and do not meet the requirements to utilize the Modified Licensing Process in Bulletin 25-04, you will complete the application process through the Iowa Insurance Division.

Staff Adjusters 

Staff adjuster licensing is optional in the state of Iowa.  If you wish to be licensed as a staff adjuster, during the application process, you will need to submit proof of employment and you will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility.

  • If you have been doing work as a staff adjuster in Iowa or any other state prior to Jan. 1, 2025, see Bulletin 25-04 for more information about the Modified Licensing Process for existing adjusters.
  • If you have been doing work as an staff adjuster in Iowa or any other state and do not meet the requirements to utilize the Modified Licensing Process in Bulletin 25-04, you may request the Iowa Insurance Division waive the required experience requirements to be considered for licensure.
  • Beginning July 1, 2025, if you are a resident of Iowa that does not hold a staff adjuster license in Iowa or any other state you will complete the application process through the NIPR online system, you will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility.

Renewal

Public adjusters who maintain a valid email address with the Iowa Insurance Division will receive a courtesy renewal reminder approximately 60 days before their license expires.  Within 60 days of license expiration, all resident and non-resident public adjusters should complete the renewal application and submit the renewal fee through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system.  Resident and non-resident public adjusters must be compliant with continuing education requirements before renewing. During the application process through the NIPR online system, you will also need to submit evidence of financial responsibility, your customer contract, and the public adjuster checklist and attestation.

Reinstate or Reissue a License

All formerly licensed resident and non-resident public adjusters may reinstate an expired license up to 12 months after the license expiration date.  Resident public adjusters must prove that during the continuing education term the associated continuing education requirements were met prior to expiration.  If continuing education requirements were not met prior to expiration, contact the Iowa Insurance Division for procedure to become compliant for reinstatement.  Once the Iowa Insurance Division shows continuing education compliance, the public adjuster must complete the renewal application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online systempay a license reinstatement fee, and a license renewal fee.  A formerly licensed public adjuster that fails to apply for a reinstatement within 12 months of license expiration must apply for a new license. During the application process through the NIPR online system, you will also need to submit current evidence of financial responsibility.

Continuing Education

The State Based Systems (SBS) online system utilized by the Iowa Insurance Division relies on the education provider, in most cases, to submit your course completion online.  If you are missing a course on your education transcript, please contact the course’s education provider.

License Status

Public adjusters licensed to do business in Iowa can check the status of their license and verify the expiration date.  Public adjusters can also print their license.  Please complete the appropriate forms to request a change of name or doing business as (DBA) namechange of address, or to voluntarily surrender a license. Update your phone number or email address through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). If you are an office administrator wishing to check on the license status or continuing education status of a licensed producer a SBS Connect account is required.
