Alert
Senate File 619 was signed into law on April 22, 2025, creating new requirements for umpires. Further information regarding the licensing process can be found below.
Umpire Examination
A person wishing to become an umpire licensed in the State of Iowa must successfully pass the appropriate licensing exam and meet the appropriate professional qualifications criteria in 522F.8. To register for the examination, please contact Pearson Vue at www.pearsonvue.com or 877-540-5825. If you successfully pass the licensing exam, your test results will be electronically submitted to the Iowa Insurance Division. Exam results are valid for 90 days. Contact the Iowa Insurance Division if you believe you qualify for an examination exemption.
Umpire Licensing
The application process will be completed through the NIPR online system. In addition to completing the NIPR application and appraiser must also complete the Umpire attestation form.
Fingerprinting and Criminal History Check
See the information related to fingerprinting and criminal history checks here.
Renewal
Umpires who maintain a valid email address with the Iowa Insurance Division will receive a courtesy renewal reminder approximately 60 days before their license expires. Within 60 days of license expiration, all umpires should complete the renewal application and submit the renewal fee through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system. Umpires must be compliant with continuing education requirements before renewing.
Iowa Insurance Division information regarding the licensure of umpires can be found in Senate File 619.
Reinstate or Reissue a License
All formerly licensed umpires may reinstate an expired license up to 12 months after the license expiration date. Umpires must prove that during the continuing education term the associated continuing education requirements were met prior to expiration. If continuing education requirements were not met prior to expiration, contact the Iowa Insurance Division for procedure to become compliant for reinstatement. Once the Iowa Insurance Division shows continuing education compliance, the umpire must complete the renewal application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system, pay a license reinstatement fee, and a license renewal fee. A formerly licensed umpire that fails to apply for a reinstatement within 12 months of license expiration must apply for a new license.
Iowa Insurance Division information regarding the licensure of umpires can be found in Senate File 619.
Continuing Education
Umpires are required to complete a minimum of 24 credits of continued education, including two hours of ethics, during each two-year license term. A list of approved courses can be found at Sircon. Click here to view your continuing education transcript. The State Based Systems (SBS) online system utilized by the Iowa Insurance Division relies on the education provider, in most cases, to submit your course completion online. If you are missing a course on your education transcript, please contact the course’s education provider.
