Insurance Producers [DRAFT]

Individuals interested in becoming either a resident or non-resident insurance producer licensed in the state of Iowa need to apply through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system.  Those wishing to become a resident insurance producer licensed in the state of Iowa must successfully pass the appropriate Iowa producer licensing exam for that specific line of authority. 

To register for the examination, please contact Pearson Vue at www.pearsonvue.com or 877-540-5825.  If you successfully pass the Iowa producer licensing exam, your test results will be electronically submitted to the NIPR online system. Please allow up to three business days for the exam results to transfer to the NIPR online system. Exam results are valid for 90 days.  Individuals that are interested in obtaining a variable line of authority also need an Iowa securities license or to have passed the Series 6 or 7 and Series 63 or 66 FINRA exams necessary to be approved.

To add additional lines of authority, a resident or non-resident insurance producer licensed in the state of Iowa need to apply through the NIPR online system.  Resident insurance producers wishing to add a line of authority must successfully pass the appropriate Iowa producer licensing exam for that specific line of authority. 

Insurance producer examinations are now available in an online format through OnVUE online proctoring by PearsonVUE.  OnVUE provides a seamless testing experience with a simple download of the application and self check-in process.  Candidates provide their own computer and a private room to take the exam, during which they’re monitored by a live proctor through the webcam and microphone to safeguard the integrity of the exam.  More information about OnVUE is available at the following:

In many instances, unlicensed personnel assist licensed insurance producers. Both the licensed insurance producer and the unlicensed personnel need to be aware of what unlicensed personnel may or may not do.

Renewal 

Insurance producers who maintain a valid email address with the Iowa Insurance Division will receive a courtesy renewal reminder approximately 60 days before their license expires.  Within 60 days of license expiration, all resident and non-resident Iowa insurance producers should complete the renewal application and submit the renewal fee through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online system.  Iowa resident insurance producers with lines of authority requiring continuing education must be compliant before renewing.

Reinstatement and Reissuance of an Expired License

A formerly licensed resident and non-resident insurance producer may reinstate an expired license up to 12 months after the license expiration date.  A resident insurance producer must prove that during the continuing education term the associated continuing education requirements were met prior to expiration.  If continuing education requirements were not met prior to expiration, contact the Iowa Insurance Division for procedure to become compliant for reinstatement.  Once the Iowa Insurance Division shows continuing education compliance, the insurance producer must complete the renewal application through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) online systempay a license reinstatement fee, and a license renewal fee.  A formerly licensed insurance producer that fails to apply for a reinstatement within 12 months of license expiration must apply for a new license.

Reinstatement and Reissuance After Disciplinary Action

An insurance producer whose license has been suspended, revoked or forfeited in connection with a disciplinary action may apply for reinstatement or reissuance in accordance with Iowa Administrative Code chapter 10 and the terms of any applicable licensing order.  

An insurance producer must complete this form and also submit an application as explained below through NIPR.

Continuing Education

The Iowa Insurance Division is responsible for issuing licenses or authority for many types of regulated individuals dealing with insurance related products.  Only courses approved by the Iowa Insurance Division will satisfy Iowa continuing education requirements.  See the information below regarding the continuing education requirements for individuals regulated by the Iowa Insurance Division.

The State Based Systems (SBS) online system utilized by the Iowa Insurance Division relies on the education provider, in most cases, to submit your course completion online.  If you are missing a course on your education transcript, please contact the course’s education provider.  In addition, the Iowa Insurance Division requires training for insurance producers selling the following products: long-term care insurance, indexed products, and annuity products.

License or Authority Status

Insurance producers licensed to do business in Iowa can check the status of their license, verify the expiration date, check company appointments, and verify lines of authority through State Based Systems's (SBS) License Services.  Check out the Enforcement Order page to see any formal actions that the Iowa Insurance Division has brought against individuals. 

Insurance producers can also print their license. Please complete the appropriate forms to request a change of name or doing business as (DBA) namechange of address, or to voluntarily surrender a license. Update your phone number or email address through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR).  If you are an office administrator wishing to check on the license status or continuing education status of a licensed producer a SBS Connect account is required.
