Des Moines, Iowa – William Michael Velky, age 59, of Hiawatha, recently pled guilty to one count of Insurance Fraud – Insurance Claim Submission, a Class D Felony, in the Iowa District Court for Linn County following an investigation by the Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau.

The investigation found Velky had been involved in a two car collision in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, during October of 2020 resulting in property damage and bodily injury.  After the collision, Velky obtained an automobile insurance policy by telephone, later asserting the collision had occurred after the inception of the insurance policy.

On May 20, 2021, Velky was remanded to the custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections for a period not to exceed five years and ordered to pay a fine in the amount of $1,025.  It was further ordered that the sentence and fine be suspended.  Velky was placed on supervised probation with the Sixth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services for a period of two years.
