An insured may file a written request for independent review of a benefit trigger determination with the commissioner after the internal appeal process has been exhausted. The request shall be submitted to the Iowa Insurance Division in writing along with a copy of the internal appeal denial and must be filed within sixty days after the insured receives written notice of the insurer’s internal appeal decision.

After submission, you will receive a letter from the insurer telling you which Independent Review Organization has been assigned to perform your independent review and further instructions will follow.  At that time, you may send supporting information to the Independent Review Organization.

The Independent Review Organization will have up to 30 days to issue a decision for the independent review.  The Independent Review Organization will notify you directly of its decision.
