Producer Fingerprinting and Criminal History Checks
Iowa Code 522B.5A establishes that the Iowa Insurance Commissioner is authorized to require certain applicants to provide the Iowa Insurance Division (IID) state and federal criminal history checks and fingerprints for a license to be issued. Integration of the fingerprinting and criminal history check process as detailed below will begin June 2, 2025. The following is a list of applicants that are required to submit fingerprints and state and federal criminal history checks.
An initial license in Iowa as a resident insurance producer.
An initial license or an additional line of authority under a nonresident insurance producer license if a state and national criminal history check has not already been completed.
A renewal, reinstatement, or reissuance of a license if the license of a producer has been revoked or suspended.
IID and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) have selected Fieldprint to conduct the fingerprinting and federal criminal history checks as authorized in 522B.5A. DCI will conduct a seperate state criminal history check utilizing the fingerprints provided by Fieldprint in addition to the information provided to them by the applicant. The cost associated with the fingerprinting and criminal history records will be borne by the applicant. Fingerprinting will take place at a Fieldprint location.

Step One: Submit Application via NIPR
Once the application has been received by the IID via NIPR, an email will be generated to the applicant which will have the information necessary to schedule an appointment to have their federal criminal history and fingerprints processed through Fieldprint. The email will contain the Iowa Insurance Division's Fieldprint code, which you will needs to complete the scheduling process.
Step Two: Fingerprinting and Federal Criminal History Check
No. Only producers that have had their license revoked or suspended and are seeking reissuance need to comply with the criminal history check and fingerprinting requirements.

Create a user account visiting the Fieldprint website and follow the prompts requesting the information required by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) for your collection event. Entering the Iowa Insurance Divisions Fieldprint Code that was emailed to you will be required during the scheduling process. You can then search for the Livescan site location nearest to you and choose a date and time that fits your schedule.

According to Fieldprint, it just takes a few minutes to set up your account and schedule your appointment. Once you have completed the fingerprinting process through Fieldprint the results are generally reported to the Iowa Insurance Division within 3 – 5 business days. In some cases, there may be delays beyond the control of the Division.

You will need to bring your appointment number and two forms of valid identification, such as a government-issue photo ID like a driver’s license, passport, or state ID card.
If you schedule an appointment at an Iowa Fieldprint site, the cost is $34.35. If you schedule an appointment at a Fieldprint site outside of Iowa the cost is $36.35.

You will need to submit your request online by filling out the DCI's Criminal History Record Billing Form, which requires your name, contact information, date of birth, and social security number.
Yes, a separate request form and payment is required for each name you have used in the past.
The Division of Criminal Investigation charges $15.00 for each name searched.
This varies based on staffing and volume. Generally, these are processed and returned within 2 – 5 business days.
The DCI will email the results back to the applicant. The applicant will then need to email the results to the Division at background.checks@iid.iowa.gov.
